It’s apple-picking season! Apples are so good for you, and they are plentiful this time of year. I’ve found myself making lots of apple butter and other recipes lately. This week I’m trying out a recipe I found for apple puffs. Now, the recipe I saw on Pinterest called for Brie, and I was fresh out of Brie. I was too impatient to wait until I got a chance to run to the store, so I decided to just try the Apple Puffs without the brie, and adjusted the recipe to be a sweet apple puff, using what I had on hand. I’m lazy when it comes to cooking and often look for shortcuts, so I used those pre-sliced apples you buy in the bags at the grocery store. We had a bunch already in the fridge, so I used those. The recipe turned out to be really simple, and oh-so-good! We had some for dessert on Saturday, and then I reheated them for a quick breakfast-to-go on Monday morning.
- 1 can of crescent roll dough
- 12 apple slices
- 1/2 cup brown sugar (I used Demerra sugar)
- 1 egg white
- 1 tablespoon water
- 1/2 cup powder sugar
- 2 tablespoons milk
In a well-oiled baking pan, lay out two crescent rolls side by side, making a rectangle. Sprinkle brown sugar on the dough. Add three apple slices to the dough, laid diagonally on the rectangle. Fold the corners of the dough to over the center of the apples, creating a mini-package type of wrapping.
Put the egg white and water together in a small bowl, and whisk together briefly with a fork to create the egg white wash. Brush the tops of the apple puffs with the egg white wash. Bake the puffs at 375 degrees for 15 minutes, until the tops are golden brown. Let cool.
For a sweet glaze: mix together the confectioner’s sugar and the milk with a fork in a small bowl. Using a spoon, drizzle the glaze over the still warm puffs. Enjoy!
